Frequently Asked Questions

What are memory quilts /memory blankets/ memorial quilts / baby clothes quilts?

Memory quilts are handmade patchwork quilts made from baby clothes, children’s clothing and/or other fabric items. Many parents have bags of baby clothes from their child’s early years which they can’t bear to part with or are too stained to sell or give away. Memory patchwork lets you hold on to those precious memories and wrap them up in a snuggly quilt or cushion, creating a family heirloom and turning them into a functional item that can be on display in your home.

Memory Quilts can also be memorial quilts which celebrate the life of a loved one by incorporating their clothes or other fabrics, as a photo quilt or a combination of the two.

How are your quilts and cushions made?

Each patchwork memory quilt or cushion is handmade especially for you by one of our talented team who all work from home on the North Yorkshire Coast. They are made in a fresh modern style, using high quality materials. We have designs to choose from or can custom design a quilt or cushion top to best suit the items you provide.

Our memory quilts are pieced using a combination of different sized pieces cut from your clothes. We try to incorporate motifs, buttons, pockets, frills and other details as appropriate. For memorial quilts we will usually design a more traditional pieced quilt top – please do request our brochure if you’d like to see the current designs available.

We use snuggly 100% cotton batting and quality patchwork fabric for backing, and machine quilt for stability and durability. Patchwork cushions are finished with a concealed zipper for a perfect finish and a polyester pad (feather on request).

Can the memory quilts, memorial quilts and cushions be washed?

The patchwork memory quilts are normally machine washable on a cool delicate cycle. The only exception to this would be where the clothes were not machine washable or where there is a lot of applique work. Full care information is provided with your finished item.

The first time you wash your memory quilt the backing and binding will shrink very slightly. This is normal and helps the quilting stitches to settle into the fabric, and gives a traditional look.

Can the memory quilts, memorial quilts and cushions be personalised?

Yes! This is a really popular option, and included on our Baby Clothes Memory Quilts. We can applique or embroider a name or word on the quilts. We can also add an embroidered label with a greeting, message or passage to the reverse of the quilts. This is particularly suitable for memorial quilts.

How long will it take to get my memory quilt, memorial quilt or cushion?

We are now taking orders for delivery at the end of August 2017 (may be extended for the larger quilts or large orders.)

Turnaround times normally vary from around 3-6 months. This may vary during busy times, so please check before ordering if this is important to you. We will confirm the timescale before confirming your order. We can sometimes accommodate rush orders or orders for a particular deadline so please ask if this is the case. If you are planning to order for Christmas then it is advisable to book your slot as early as possible as we are normally booked up by the middle of August.

How do I get the clothes to you?

If you live nearby (or fancy a trip to the seaside!) then the clothes can be dropped off to us (in the centre of Scarborough), or you can come and visit for a consultation before ordering. The majority of our customers are from other parts of the country and mail the clothes to us.

What do I need to provide?

Just your laundered clothing! The price covers all materials other than your clothes.

I’ve found something similar elsewhere, why should I choose Patchwork Castle?

Our aim is to produce the best quality memory quilts available. Considerable time, quality materials, skills and love that go into producing them. We endeavour to offer a high quality product that exceeds your expectations. We won’t skimp on the details that will make your quilt extra special.

A big factor in deciding where to have your quilt made will be the style of the particular designer and finding a quilter who can produce a look you like. Alongside this it’s important to consider in particular whether fabrics will be stabilized, the quality of materials that will be used and how the quilt will be finished (i.e. is it properly quilted etc) as these are the factors that will have the biggest bearing on the life and quality of your quilt.

A couple of safety notes

The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID) recommend that you do not use a duvet, quilt or pillow for children under one year. For more information please see http://fsid.org.uk.  Please also note that these items are not toys and may contain small items such as buttons and other embellishments that may present a choking hazard (we can leave these out if you wish). Our quilts are not designed for use as loose covers on sofas or chairs. Keep away from fires and naked flames.
